Emily's Posts

Introducing... (drum roll please) Emily's Posts! We're enthused that our newest On Paper-ette, Emily Halnon will be signing on with a weekly column titled "Emily's Posts".

With subject matter ranging from what's new in the shop to correspondence and social changes in communication style, we can't wait to share Emily's insight.

A twenty something, who is quite new to Columbus, Emily is no stranger to the Short North. She has worked at Substance and started working at On Paper last year as as our first ever intern. Prior to meeting Emily, we had never considered an intern because our product is intensive, specific and difficult to master in a finite period of time. But her determination to work in the shop, glowing presence and unabashed love of writing and all things stationery made her impossible to resist! And it's been a true success story ever since. Emily was hired as a part time associate four months after her internship began, and just last week she joined On Paper as a full time member of our team.

Emily grew up on Robert Frost Mountain in Vermont so, perhaps, it's no surprise that she was a English major at The College of Wooster. Her senior thesis focused on diaries as a means of self expression for women and her fascination with the social implications of writing is a key interest.

When prompted to share her initial thoughts on social media writing vs. personal writing Emily explained the distinction: Private communication and expression is about establishing your personal self and individuality while social media is about connecting with others- forging bonds though similarities and building community.

At On Paper we are continually engaged in the evolution of the written word and we can't wait to hear, and learn more as we read Emily's posts!!

Extreme Thank You

Just arrived in the mail today: a much appreciated thank you note from Kara Wheeler, one of the producers for Extreme Makeover Home Edition. The December 16th episode featured a Columbus family and a truly extreme makeover. Michelle volunteered at the building site and On Paper donated papery goods...

Watch a re-cap of the show here. Best of luck in the future to the Rhodes family, and thank you to Kara for the sweet note!

Capital Style Bride January 2012

We were honored to be invited to participate in the January 2012 issue of Capital Style and were featured in the cover story Elegant Glamour!

The concept for the photo shoot was styled by fellow Short North Wedding Collective member Kasey Skobel-Conyers, founder of Bliss Events.

The invitation: Hand calligraphed in white ink on Ash die cut card stock. Designed and produced in-house at On Paper by On Paper Press.

Die cut table number cards, seating cards and menus carry the elegance of chic glam calligraphy through out the event. We love the Ash/Pale Peach color combo accented with gold- perfect for the decor and classic elegance with a touch of drama!

We had a great time seeing old friends and meeting new colleagues- proving once again that Columbus has some amazingly talented wedding professionals- perfect to help create your perfect day!

Royal Wedding Invitation

THE Invitation
Photo: Brides.com

If you haven't seen THE invitation to THE most talked about wedding in decades- here IT is! Thoughts from any of the common folk out there? We'd love to hear your opinion! Here's ours...

Aside from the astoundingly beautiful insignia at the top- we were, well, royally underwhelmed. The wording is just what we expected- distant, formal, fancy, full of protocol... which is actually quite beguiling. But what strikes us is how impersonal it is... the fill in for the guests name (could they not have left out the fill in the blank lines and just, well, filled it in? And the calligraphy used (not shown) was more than underwhelming as well.

We do, however, love the horizontal orientation, are surprised by the rather abruptness of it all. And, we LUV the reply information all inclusive on the invitation itself. We love that it is assumed that no one could or would (or should!) consider phoning or emailing a reply- letters by post only. Archaic yes- lovely yes!

Needless to say- we have a few selections in our on On Paper invitation arsenal that we thought would have been fit for a Queen and Princess- offering that classic elegance but with a tad more flair.

And this doesn't even touch on the REALLY lovely, far more creative letterpress options we would have loved to see this modern couple toss in to the traditional faire.

Tell us: What would YOUR fairy tale invitation look like???

Overheard in the shop...

Overheard in the shop this morning...

Boy: Daddy, what's this?

Dad: A typewriter.

Boy: What's that?

Interesting to reflect as another year draws to a close- how much has changed in such a relatively short time. What new tech-ventions will be discovered in the New Year???

6 Tips for Holiday Card Writing

Wondering what to say in those Holiday cards you just purchased?! Here are a few suggestions...

1. It's not so much what you say or how you say it... it's sending the card that really matters.

2. When sending cards to business colleagues- keep it short and simple:

Sending all best wishes to you and your family-

Kindest regards,
Jim Smith

3. Had a bad year? Write about what you've learned, where this path has lead. Look for the silver lining and send positive energy for the New Year.

4. Don't brag! It's hard not to- especially when writing an annual letter. Rather than listing all the great things your kids have accomplished- write about what they have learned, how an experience made them grow or develop new skills. Talk about why they have made you proud, what their accomplishment means to you, your children, your family.

5. Think about the most memorable event of the year and highlight it in a snippet on a holiday card:

Dear Sarah and Jim-

Hope you have had a great year and that this cards finds you both well. Our year has been a busy one, highlighted by an Anniversary cruise to Alaska with the children. We had a wonderful journey with many great adventures.
All best to you and yours for a terrific 2010!

Much love-
Carrie and Steve

6. While e-cards may be tempting- free postage, quick and easy- remember- the holidays come once a year. There is nothing more personal or meaningful than going to the mailbox and finding a handwritten envelope in your pile of bills, especially when it's from someone who really matters. Taking the time to write and send cards is a wonderful holiday tradition- so deck the halls with letters in abundance!!!

Mailboxes, etc.

On a recent trip out to Boulder I saw this great row of mailboxes (center) tucked in to a lovely vine covered arbor. Sigh- will these quaint antiquities become a thing of the past!??? I think not.

Denial or delusional????
Your thoughts?

No Business Like Show Business

Arrived home yesterday from THE show- what a whirlwind week! The show was much busier than expected I am happy to say. There was much anticipation about both buyer and exhibitor turnout due to the economy but I think everyone was pleasantly surprised. Perhaps things are looking up?!

Our setup for Green Paper Company was impressive and the booth was BUSY- lots of people, lots of shopping green. :) You can read more about that side of things on the Green Paper Company Blog. I gave a presentation to a sold out crowd- "How to Create Eco-Friendly Invites and Favors" assisted by fellow retailer Grace Cole of Scribe Paper from Marblehead, MA. Scribe printed some of the GPC iimprintable invitations and did a beautiful job. The Demo created lots of buzz and was very well received. Perhaps I can present a similar version at the shop??? Any interest?

I'm still getting the hang of my dual role as buyer/exhibitor- two very large set of hats to wear and it's a challenge to do both. But LOTS of fun and one thing's for sure- I love a challenge! It was hard to get out of the booth but I did source many new things and can't wait to bring them in. My main focus was greeting cards so lots of newness on the way. My camera, (my new camera!) had a glitch all week so I did not post- my apologies but I will post ongoing with new additions before and after they arrive.

Many highlights to the week- it's an exciting time! But I am glad to be home with my two dogs, my Beau, and looking forward to a few days off to spend Memorial Day weekend opening up my beloved cottage for the summer. Happy weekend to all!

Lavishgiving.com

It's not everyday that one of your best friends launches a new business. And what a business it is! Jane Pennells has been working on the development of her charitable giving website Lavishgiving.com for over a year. And now, in all of incredibly beautiful splendor here it is- live and on the web! I have to say it may well be one of the most beautiful sites on the internet. The most beautiful thing about it is that all sales over $100 receive a "Good Card" worth 20% of your purchase, redeemable at Network for Good where you can donate to your charity of choice.

Here's a brief preview of some of the simply scrumptious assortment you can find on the Lavishgiving.com site. Talk about guilt free shopping! The more you get- the more you give!!!
